For Self-Published Authors

We know it's tough to get published these days and while we don't publish self-published mystery authors ourselves, we have put together some resources that may help you if you find yourself on that journey.

Award

The Toby Award

When Peggy found out that she no longer qualified for any of the literary awards she had previously been shortlisted for or won, she created the Toby Award, named after her TV-watching dog, Toby. The Toby Award is intended to amplify the voices of other self-published Canadian mystery authors who have been unable to get, or stay published, and who don't sell their books in traditional ways.

Eligibility Criteria

  • The book must be a mystery novel (can be crime fiction, thriller, police procedural, cozy, noir etc.)
  • The author must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident.
  • The book must be entirely self-published (the ISBN number must be registered in the author's name or that of the author's imprint). Hybrid models are not eligible.
  • The book must be a trade paperback (e-books are not eligible)
  • Deadline for submission is mid-December each year.
  • See The Toby Award website for other details.
